I don't think anyone wanted NOT to be in school more than John. But he was actually friendly if you wanted to talk to him. He reminded me of James Dean in a rebel sort of way. I rather liked him, and wish I had talked to him more often.

It shook me to hear of John's passing. Though we were never close, he and I often laughed about our shared "reputations" as being rebels, or bad boys. One of my fondest memories of John was going out in the woods with our girlfriends after a fresh snowfall and playing silly games for a couple hours. Great fun. John always struck me as having a sweet side under that tough exterior.

I've known John most of my life ~ we both lived at the very top of Bay Ridge Avenue going back to kindergarden days. One night as I was leaving an AA meeting at church there was a message on my cell phone. It was from John! He read about my sobriety in the last reunion booklet. We had several long talks about where our lives had taken us over the years. I was touched by his reaching out to me as a brother in recovery as well as an opponent playing King on the Mountain in his backyard! I was very sorry to hear of his passing but am grateful that we reconnected.
